How do I stop using pornography?

If you want to stop using porn, you’re going to have to really be honest with yourself and almost ruthless.

Here are some practical ways to protect yourself from the temptation to use pornography:

#1: Block certain tv channels

If you watch cable tv late at night by yourself in the living room, you’re going to have to do something different. You’ll probably have to block certain channels from being accessible.

#2: Install blockers on your computers and phones

If computer porn or phone porn is the issue, you’re probably going to have to install software to block access to porn. Covenant Eyes is a good resource.

#3: Determine what lines you won’t cross

While blockers are useful, you have to determine in your heart what lines you won’t cross. From there, you have to be downright legalistic about those lines. This doesn’t make us whole by observing those lines, but it buys us some time so we can work through some of the deeper issues.

Practical Advice from Russell Willingham

So for myself, even when I got totally away from porn, I had to be cautious about bringing up stories online about the latest female rock star or actress and what she was doing. I used to look at those stories, but they would always lead to other things which were not appropriate. I determined I don’t need to know what Britney Spears is doing with her career. I don’t need to know what Nicki Minaj has to say about x or y because it’s really my flesh looking for an opportunity but not admitting it to myself. So I don’t follow up on those stories or look at the pop-up ads.

You have to be really honest with yourself about this. And you need somebody in your life that you can talk to, somebody who can hold you accountable.
