Breaking Free – Video Sessions + Leaders Guide

(for viewing by small groups) featuring Russell Willingham.

In this practical 13-part video-based series for men, Russell Willingham focuses on men’s struggle with sexual temptation.

Drawing from personal experience and the stories of those he has counseled, Russell brings understanding to the root issues of sexual addiction and how to find victory.

These video sessions are most effective when used with the Breaking Free Workbook and the Breaking Free Leaders Guide.

Session One: Introduction [4:59]

Those who struggle with sexual sin (maybe a few times a year) or a full-blown sexual addiction (daily, weekly, or a few times a month) all have a predictable cycle. If we hope to stop this cycle we must look at it honesty, understand it and bring it to the Lord.

Session Two – Essential 1: Aligning Ourselves with God [2:29]

With enough willpower, we can clean up our act pretty well (at least for a while). But we are contending that genuine recovery (deep transformation of our sexuality and personality) is not possible unless we align ourselves with God. Only He can truly bring freedom to our compulsive behaviors.

Session Three – Essential 2: The Power of Genuine Friendship [2:33]

As men, we tend to isolate. Quite frankly—most of us live this way because we don’t have a clue how to enter the lives of other men or how to let them enter ours. And some of us don’t believe it’s worth the trouble. We must engage with other members of Christ’s body in ways that are honest, risky, and even terrifying. Sunday mornings aren’t enough.

Session Four – Essential 3: Exploring Family Issues [4:08]

Many of our battles with sexual and relational brokenness in the present find their beginnings in family brokenness from our past. Some of us can see obvious connections. Some of us, however, see little to no connection. What if God simply calls us to seek the truth about our lives and follow wherever that leads?

Session Five – Essential 4: Taking Ownership of our Choices [3:41]

Many of our struggles today aren’t just a result of childhood trauma but our responses to that trauma (which continue to this day). When life gets hard we’re tuning out, running to fantasy, turning our anger inward or getting mad at the world. It’s one thing to do this when we’re seven; it’s quite another to do it when we’re twenty-seven or fifty-seven.

Session Six – Essential 5: “Will the Real God Please Stand Up?” [4:23]

One reason we continue running to our sexually compulsive behaviors is because we have a broken God image (a warped view of God). If we truly knew (like we say we do) that God was loving, all-welcoming, and indescribably tender we would run to him instead of to our sins. The fact that our sex addiction is still an issue is telling us something about how we see God.

Session Seven – Essential 6: The Biblical Basis of Our Identity [5:29]

Our true beliefs are proven by what we feel and how we act. If we have a faulty God-image it follows automatically that we will have a faulty self-image. We must recognize the lies we have believed and go after them with the truth.

Session Eight – Essential 7: Admitting Our True State [3:50]

Brokenness and sinfulness are not the same things. But, when we struggle with our brokenness almost all of us turn to something sinful to manage the pain of it. For many of us, this is where compulsive sexuality enters the picture. Where I’m broken I must seek connection with Jesus and others for healing.

Session Nine – Essential 8: Wrestling With Grace [12:05]

Grace is what separates faith in Jesus from every other world religion. If you don’t embrace God’s grace to you as a sexual struggler there will be no genuine freedom for you. You might succeed in changing some behaviors but your core brokenness will never change.

Session Ten – Essential 9: Facing Our Dark Side [3:36]

If Christ has come to live inside you and given you a new nature your old ways of thinking, feeling, and automatically responding have not been removed. But you do have the power now to remove those old, familiar ways of living as you submit to the new nature implanted in you.

Session Eleven – Essential 10: Dealing with the Lonely Abuser Within [2:01]

Sex isn’t evil. Nor is our desire for sex (or the pleasures of sex) an evil thing. But if we allow our dark side to lead us into sexual addiction or sexual anorexia (if we’re married) we bring great harm to ourselves and others.

Session Twelve – Essential 11: Bringing God into the Area of Need [2:10]

When you're lonely or bored, evil desires or fantasies often rear their ugly head. Hopefully, you’ve given up feeding and indulging this thing. But you may have found that wishing it away doesn’t work either. It's time to "hear" what the fantasy is saying and respond to it.

Session Thirteen – Essential 12: Radical Honesty & Its Evangelizing Effect [2:53]

Mature men understand themselves and the real world. They have learned how to deal with challenges in themselves and the world around them more effectively. When we function out of that healthier, more adult part of us (on the inside) we impact those around us in a positive way. This genuine maturity is irresistible (and rare!).
